ML Ops Engineer, Machine Learning & AI

About the role The Machine Learning & AI team at NYT builds and maintains the infrastructure hosting all real-time ML inference models, including both data and compute. As an MLOps Engineer you will partner with product, data science, and ML platform engineers to build and maintain the infrastructure powering the ML lifecycle — automating and refining training, deployment, monitoring, and management of ML models. This role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of Data Management Infrastructure. Responsibilities - Build and automate ML pipelines with robust CI/CD for automated model training, validation, deployment, and retraining - Productionalize models by building processes for packaging, containerizing, and deploying ML models as scalable, low-latency, highly-available services - Implement and manage comprehensive monitoring for production models, tracking system health, data drift, and model performance degradation - Manage and evolve the MLOps toolchain, including model registries, feature stores, experiment tracking systems, and model serving platforms - Partner with data scientists to understand model requirements and optimize them for production; support software engineers in integrating ML services - Champion and enforce MLOps best practices for reproducibility, versioning (data, code, model), testing, and governance Requirements - 2+ years of software engineering or DevOps experience focusing on MLOps and infrastructure - 2+ years of programming experience in Python or Go - Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins) - Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) - Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP) and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) - Strong commitment to journalistic independence and the NYT mission Nice to have - Experience with ML platforms such as SageMaker, Vertex AI, or similar - Familiarity with feature stores or experiment tracking tools (MLflow, Weights & Biases) Benefits & perks - Variable pay including annual bonus and restricted stock - Medical, dental, and vision benefits; Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) - Company-matching 401(k) plan - Paid vacation, sick days, and parental leave - Tuition reimbursement and professional development programs Compensation $110,000-$130,000 USD yearly.
