About the role
The Tech Strategy Director, Compute is a senior leadership role within Google DeepMind's Technology Strategy (TechStrat) Compute team, responsible for driving AI strategy, infrastructure investments, and AI product portfolio optimization across Google. The role frames high-impact strategic decisions for SVP+ leadership, translating deep analysis into actionable options and ensuring flawless execution through cross-functional collaboration. Since compute is the key ingredient for AI model leadership and research, this leader's decisions will directly shape the future of AI at Google and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Investigate and drive clarity on Google's hardest long-range strategic questions in AI
- Model scenarios and tradeoffs to create opinionated strategies for maximizing AI value and optimizing AI investments
- Create and partner with virtual teams across Google to build comprehensive product and policy plans
- Develop SVP+ forum content including presentations, communications, and mandates
- Build and maintain a living catalog of ongoing experiments and proposed innovations
- Establish per-mandate monitoring views to keep programs accountable
- Identify gaps in processes and information and propose or implement solutions
- Collaborate with operational teams to ensure SVP+ mandates are well-organized and staffed
Requirements
- BA/BS degree in Computer Science, EE, or equivalent practical experience in a technical or business area
- 15+ years of product management experience at a technology-driven company at scale
- Proven track record driving 0→1 product capabilities and founding high-impact technical initiatives
- Stellar verbal and written communication with past SVP/VP+ level audience experience
- Extensive experience in product operations and business strategy
- Strong analytics, strategy, and data fluency
- Experience in a role dealing with machine learning and/or compute
- Ability to influence without direct authority across technical and cross-functional teams
Nice to have
- Familiarity with the role of compute and data in building LLMs and their capabilities
- Strong product vision with prior experience embedding applied AI into products
- 5+ years of product strategy experience managing technically complex, multi-stakeholder projects
- Experience navigating sensitive organizational dynamics
- Past people management and distributed team hiring experience
- Experience in corporate planning
